1953 SPORTSMAN’S TROPHY
PRESENTATION TO BARRY BROWN
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 3.
Barry Brown, British Empire welterweight boxing champion, received the New Zealand “Sportsman of the Year” trophy from the Deputy-Prime Minister (Mr K. J. Holyoake) at a representative gathering of sportsmen in Wellington tonight. Brown was awarded the 1953 trophy by a panel of New Zealand sports editors. Previous winners were B. Sutcliffe in 1949, Miss Yvette Williams in 1950 and 1952, and R. A. Jarden in 1951. Mr P. Coyle, representing the donors of the trophy, said Brown had done a tremendous amount to win greater public favour for boxing, rown had crowned his successes in 1953 by winning the British Empire title from Gerald Dreyer. He was the first professional to win the “Sportszaau of the Year** trophy
