MORE ARMS FOR REPUBLICS
U.S. Aid To Central America
(Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, June 2. The United States was reported today to be assembling a shipload of arms for Honduras and Nicaragua to counter any threat posed by the recent Communist arms shipment to Guatemala.
A Defence Department spokesman said the military aid would be sent from New Orleans in four or six weeks to supplement the arms flown to. the two Central American countries last month.
He said the air shipments were designed to “dramatise” the military aid agreements recently with the two countries. The shipload would start the “normal flow” of arms to Honduras and Nicaragua. These two countries are of strategic importance to the United States since they separate Guatemala, where communism has gained a strong foothold, from the Panama Canal.
United States concern over Communist inroads in the area increased sharply last month with a report that Guatemala had received 2000 tons of arms from Poland.
Diplomatic sources reported today that some of the Communist arms bore remnants of lend-lease material sent to the Soviet Union during World War 11.
