U.S. SURPLUS SKIM MILK
Distribution To Asia Urged
(Rec. 8 p.m.)--. WASHINGTON, Apr. 30. Mr Norris Dodd, former DirectorGeneral of the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, said today that millions of underfed children in the world needed the surplus dried skim milk which the United States was,now feeding to pigs. (Mr Doda, who was giving testimony before the House of Representatives Agriculture Committee, urged
legislation to give the relief agencies broader authority to move surplus foods into areas “where they will win friends for America.”
He said he had noted that the Agriculture Department announced last week it would sell dried skim milk at low prices if the buyer guaranteed to use it for livestock feed. Millions of children in Africa, India and the Far East were suffering from nutritional diseases for which the specific remedy was milk. “We have got other available proteins to feed hogs,” Mr Dodd added. “But those people do not have anything to feed their kids.”
