RACECOURSE REFRESHMENTS
Sir, —Recently we read of the condition of thfe drinking, facilities at a North Island racecourse, given by a Eolice inspector. I feel sure they could e no more worse than those at New Brighton on Saturday—with the exception of the women* element. At Brighton the counters were a sea of spilt beef, and the washing facilities for the glasses just as bad. As for service, it does not exist. The size of the glass must return a handsome profit, surely enough to give cleanliness and some service. The refreshments, four cakes and a cup of tea, 2s; tea, 6d; four quarter-size sandwiches, Is 6d, and not much at that. If the members’ bar and refreshment room were closed for one meeting and they had to take what the Eublic takes, and pay double the price, lere would be a change.—Yours, etc., CLEAN OUT. February 23, 1954. [The secretary of the New Brighton Trotting Club (Mr D. C. Parker) said yesterday that the letter had been referred to the club’s caterers, who had no comment to make.]
