LOSS OF FERTILE LAND

Sir, —Primary products being primary needs of both town and country residents, should it not be a common duty to strike a safe balance between communities to preserve fertile land? The production of goods of less importance to the maintenance of life might well be left to those countries more suited by size to make and export such goods, leaving room in New Zealand for her fruit farm and dairy lands to remain in wise and necessary proportion relative to health and prosperity. Limited city growth and reasonable expansion of smaller townships for manufacturing purposes have been achieved elsewhere to maintain health and prevent congestion elsewhere. Why not here?—Yours, etc., NOSE AND FACE. March 25, 1954.
