HEALTH OF THE POPE
“Pale But In Good Spirits” VATICAN CITY, March 23. Pale, but in better spirits that at any time since he .was struck down by a grave stomach ailment two months ago, the Pope was today wheeled on to a glassed-in veranda overlooking St. Peter’s Basilica. There he discussed current Church business with his two Pro-Secretaries of State, and personally read some 30 morning newspapers piled on a table beside his wheel chair. It is understood that since last Sunday the Pope’s doctors have completely suspended the indirect feeding which had maintained him since his illness became acute. He is now able to take a breakfast of skimmed milk and orange juice and a lunch of vegetable soup, purecd potatoes, delicate Italian cheese made from skimmed milk and semi-liquid fruit extract. His supper usually consists of a milk dish and grated fruit. At intervals during the day the Pontiff is given tonic injections. Professor Niehans, originator of the reinvigorating treatment which he calls “cellular therapy,” is understood to be giving the Pope injections of ox brains extract. This he believes to have a strongly therapeutic effect on the lesions of the stomach. It is hoped that the Pope will be well enough to appear before the huge crowds of pilgrims to Rome at Easter.
