WAR DEFENCE OF IWO JIMA
MANY BODIES STILL IN CAVES (Rec. 8 p.m.) NEW YORK. March 23. Captain George Bieber, a United States Air Force chaplain, estimated at Iwo Jima today that there are at least 10,000 Japanese bodies in the thousands of caves honeycombing Iwo Jima, a former Japanese defence bastion in World War 11. After exploring 18 of the largest cave systems on the island, he said he had seen at least 5000 Japanese skeletons and bodies. Iwo Jima was defended to the last Japanese soldier, and more than 20,000 died on the small island. Less than 400 were captured by United .States marines during the battle, which'lasted nearly a month. Fanatical Japanese defenders made their last stand from the inter-connected caves.
