ONEKAKA IRON DEPOSITS
GOVERNMENT NOT TO DEVELOP WORKS
REOPENING BY PRIVATE BUYER UNCERTAIN
(New Zealand Press Association) NELSON, March 23.
The Government does not intend to develop the Onekaka iron and steel works as a State enterprise, and is advertising for sale the assets of the works. This was announced today by the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr J. T. Watts) in a statement from Wellington. Mr Watts said that the works were reconditioned in 1942 for use if New Zealand’s overseas supply of pig iron had been interrupted under war conditions. However, the works had not been in normal production since 1935, and the assets were therefore being advertised for sale by the Government Stores Board. Whether the works would be reopened and operated by private enterprise or alternatively dismantled for the value of the equipment would depend on the nature of the offers received, said Mr Watts.
