RUSSIANS WARN ARAB STATES
(Rec. 8 p.m.) CAIRO, March 23. The Soviet Union today informed Egypt and the other Arab countries that it would consider the conclusion of any Western-sponsored Middle East military pact “an unfriendly and even hostile act,’’ directed against her. The new Soviet Ambassador to Egypt (Mr Daniel Solod), in an interview with the Egyptian Foreign Minister (Dr. Fawzy), explained the Kremlin attitude towards Middle East defence pacts. Russia first told Egypt and the Arab countries that she was opposed to Middle East defence pacts in 1951 when the United States, Britain. France and Turkey proposed the Middle East Defence Command. Soviet envoys in the Arab capitals, have since pressed the Kremlin viewpoint every time the Arab countries have been near to concluding defence pacts with the Western Powers. Last night Egypt announced she would resist the Western policy of bilateral pacts with the Arab countries until the Suez Canal dispute had. been settled.
