MARGARINE PRICE
Top Quality At 1/9 Per Lb
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) LONDON, March 24. The battle between margarine and butter began in earnest last night when the first price news was given by Mr Clive van den Bergh, head of the Unilever subsidiary, which before the war supplied two-thirds of the margarine consumed in Britain. The company will offer top quality margarine at Is 9d per lb when margarine controls end on May 9. The present standard quality costs Is 6d per lb. Butter is controlled at 3s 4d per lb, but the price is expected to rise to 4s or 4s 6d when butter is unrationed in May.. The “Daily Mail” says margarine companies will fight to extend the market at the expense of butter. Two or three other firms will make a bid tor housewives’ favour.
The New Zealand and Australian dairy authorities are understood to be showing the keenest interest in the bids by margarine firms to capture markets at the possible expense of the Dominions’ butter.
