SIEGE OF DIEN BIEN PHU
FRENCH RECAPTURE ROAD POSITION
SAIGON, March 21. The French and Vietnamese troops in besieged Dien Bien Phu have smashed their way through the Vietminh rebel troops blocking the road to the southernmost outpost of the fortress, the French High Command announced tonight. . j - ♦ The rebels had infiltrated into the valley from positions in the surrounding jungles, and their troops stood astride the three-mile-long road to the outpost. In a battle yesterday the French Union forces reopened the road, killing 14 Vietminh and taking one prisoner. The French communique said that the Vietminh activities around the fortress had quietened down in the last 24 hours. A French Vietnamese patrol had penetrated 600 yards from its main position before clashing with the rebels. , , The French High Command announced tonight that the Vietminh troops had cut in several places Road 39, running near the Red river. In a violent clash in the delta near the Gulf of Tonking yesterday, Vietnamese troops killed 23 rebels near the town of Phat Dierfi. In the middle of Annam, French and Vietnamese troops are fanning out from Port Quinhon, which they captured in an amphibious assault from the China Sea last week.
