OWNER-BUILDING OF HOMES

MR SULLIVAN REPLIES ‘TO CRITICS (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, March 23. “No-one except the antagonists of the scheme pretends, that we hope to turn out complete carpenters, but we hope to give these young men an elementary knowledge that will enable them to -do certain work themselves, and thereby make their limited finance go further,” said the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan) today, in reply to critics of the Government’s “build-your-own-home” scheme. Mr Sullivan said that more than 20 Wellington men, who were to have their own homes, would be disappointed at the obstacle placed in their path by the decision of the Wellington Technical College building trades advisory committee not to support the scheme. “Most of them cannot afford to have their houses built completely by contractors, but they have enough initiative and determination to do all or part of the job themselves,” he said. “Isn’t it better for us to give them some guidance so that their chances of success are improved?”
