CHEVIOT CLUB’S MEETING .

STARLIGHT SHOULD RACE WELL

ALERT ALSO EXPECTED TO WIN

Starlight, which has had four placings from nine starts this season, may gain a long overdue win in the First Trial Handicap at the Cheviot Trotting Club’s annual meeting to be held in conjunction with the Rangiora Trotting Club at Rangiora today. The U. Scott mare has more than average ability, but she, has often been a little slow at the start of her races. This fault has cost her several winning chances. Owned and trained at Aylesbury by F. Jamison, Starlight is a good type of mare. Bonny Argyle finished a good sixth over two miles at Washdyke last week, and over the shorter distance today she will be much harder to beat. J. L. Behrns has her near her best, and she should not be long striking form. Fervent Scott has not raced for some time, but he usually races well when fresh and may show up. The stablemate of the Washdyke winner. Recent Choice, is a good type of young pacer, and he should develop worth-while form.

Golden Chimes, a three-year-old sister to a good winner in the North Island in Patrick Earl, was impressive when she qualified at New Brighton recently. She may need a race or two before she shows her best, but it will not be surprising if she is prominent. Rapid Rival has run fair races in recent weeks, and in none of her last four races has she finished further back than seventh. With a favourable run today the Wayfarer mare could be hard to beat. Florican has raced consistently without much luck this season. She has a fair turn of speed and may be hard to beat. Others likely to show up include' Gay Lad (an. acceptor also at Oamaru), and Scottish Song., Alert’s Good Form The speedy Dillon Hall stallion. Alert, may bring a welcome change of luck to his trainer and part-owner, G. S. Smith, in the Second Trial Handicap. Alert has been placed in his three appearances this season. His last start was at, Geraldine, when he finished a good third after being slow away. He should be improved as a result of that race, and is expected to do better today. The hardest for Alert to beat may be Super Light. Which will have his first start in public. A three-year-old colt by Super Globe from Filigree, Super Light showed plenty of ability when he qualified recently. Another pacer making his first public appearance. Double Grattan, is also expected to show up. Double Grattan, a six-year-old mare by Josedale Grattan from Wainoni Girl, is trained by J. G. Hampton at Belfast.

Surf man should be improved by his recent racing, and it is expected that he will show to advantage. He is a good type of three-year-old colt by Josedale Grattan from Palm Beach.

Several ofr the others in the race have fair recent form, and the best may be Felicity, Radiant Lady, and Scottish Fair.

Two promising three-year-old trotters which have been entered for the New Zealand Trotting Stakes at Addington next month, Ailsa Craig and Barravey. will add interest to the Domett Handicap Both have shown up in trials, and they may be prominent. However, Remodel, which will have his first start from A. M. Purdon’s stables may be the hardest to beat. The Josedale Dictator gelding has had a number of placings, and if he trots solidly he should be prominent. Victory Cheer has at times shown speed in his races, and he will need only to trot solidly to be hard to beat. Overdale La.d raced well on the BlenheimNelson circuit. He has had a chance to freshen up since then, and, as he is racing on his own course, he will probably be solidly supported.' Ailsa Craig, a filly by U. Scott from a smart mare a few years ago in Sure Lady, will be hard to beat if she hits out correctly. She has more than average speed- Barravey, a gelding by Light Brigade from Golden Pointer, has shown to advantage at trials, and he, too, may be hard to beat. Others expected to race well are Gay Tune, Sure Dale, and Recruit, Another capacity field is carded for the Southbrook Handicap, which will be run over two miles. Lady Biddy has done well since being trained by G. Cameron, and she may add to her record in this race. The Gallant Knight mare will need only to trot solidly to be the hardest to beat. Little Dictator has shown his ability to master a distance, and he will probably be one of the favourites. The Josedale Dictator gelding is usually reliable, and he should race well. Shirley Dillon showed speed in her only race this season when she finished seventh at Washdyke in January. She is returning to her best, and is expected to be one of the hardest to beat. Prepared won well at Washdyke last Saturday, and she may show up again. Jacinta was a dual winner at Reefton last month. She is not always reliable, but will need only to trot solidly to have prospects of being placed. Others likely to show up include Suredale. Te Waihopi, Roscoe Boy, and Victory Cheer. The other races have all filled well, and the racing should be of a high standard.
