SUDAN UPPER HOUSE
Pro-Egypt Party Wins Control (Rec. 7 p.m.) KHARTOUM, Dec. 15. The National Union Party, supported by Egypt, has won 21 of the 30 elected scats in the Sudan Senate (the Upper House) of the new Parliament, according to the final general election results. National Unionists won 50 of the 97 seats in the House of Representatives (the Lower House). The Senate has 30 elected members and 20 appointed by the Sudan Gov-ernor-General (Sir Robert Howe).
Sir Robert Howe, in the next few days, will send his list of 20 nominations to the Governor-General’s Commission for consideration. The commission’s chairman is Mr Syed Ziauddin, of Pakistan, who is now drawing up the commission's rules and procedure. The final Senate results are:— National Unionists 21, Umma Party 4, Southern Party 3, Independents 2. The final House of Representatives results were: National Unionists 50. Umma Party 23, Independents 11, Southern Party 9. Socialist Republicans 3. Anti-Imperialism Front 1. Mr Sukumar Sen, the Indian chairman of the Sudan Electoral Commission, in a farewell broadcast to Sudanese last night said: “In spite of the pessimistic fears entertained by some, your election can legitimately claim to have been a model of its kind in many ways, taking into account the tremendous difficulties that had to be surmounted. My task was not easy by any means, but the cause I served more than compensated for all the hard work, trouble, worries and anxieties I had to undergo.
“Sudan is very much an underdeveloped countrv and your Government and people will have to work very hard during many long years so that you may, in due course, take your rightful place in the comity of nations.”
