NEW BRIGHTON SHOPS
TWO EXEMPTIONS FROM CLOSING HOURS Two more shops at New Brighton were granted partial exemption from the closing hours fixed by the Shops and Offices Act, when the applications were heard by Mr Rex C. Abernethy, S.M.. in the Magistrate’s yesterday. They were Canterbury Furnishers. Ltd., of Seaview road, represented by Mr D. H. Stringer, and Pacific Stores. Ltd., of Seaview road, represented by Mr A. N. Mackay. Mr H. W. Thompson, for the Retail Shop Assistants’ Union, made a formal objection in each case. The Magistrate: A voice crying in the wilderness, it would seem, Mr Thompson. The shops in New Brighton seemed to be switching over in toto to keeping open on Saturday afternoon, said the Magistrate. Mr W. Mealings, for the Labour Department, said that was the case. New shops were opening and they were seeking partial exemption from the provisions of the act also. were some still to come. The department had no objections to the applications.
