WOMEN’S CLUB

CHRISTMAS PARTY The annual Christmas party of the Canterbury Women's Club opened on a cheerful note last evening, when the president ’Mrs N. W. Gale), after welcoming the Mayoress (Mrs R- M. Macfarlane) and members, announced that two members of the club, who wished to remain anonymous, had given a donation of £5O towards the club s building fund. Members all wore tiaras, many of them beautifully made and most effective. A handsome Christmas tree was the gift of Mrs C. E. Boon, and the Christmas cake was given by Mrs Gale. Mrs F. G. Weideman’s original play. "The Key,” which won a cup given by Mrs G. H. Watts (immediate past president of the club), was presented by members of the drama circle, directed by Mrs J. A. Meldrum. Those in the cast were Mrs F. Tempero. Mrs Weideman, Mrs C. F. Barnett. Mrs A. W. Hollingum. Mrs F. C. Penfold, Mrs J. Woolcock, and Miss L. Widdowson. who successfully played one role at only two days’ notice. The music circle, wlih Mrs A. C. Ledsham as conductor, sang many carols and old-fashioned songs tnat were warmly received. Mrs Watts presented the G. H. Watts Cup to Mrs Weideman, who is ’ the first winner of the trophy, and expressed pleasure at the number of good original works entered for the competition. The Corrie Aslin McLaren Cup was this year awarded jointly to Mrs Catherine Andersen, wife of Mr Johannes Andersen, who now lives in Auckland, and to Miss Blanche Baughan, of Akaroa, who were instrumental in founding the Canterbury Women’s Club about 40 years ago. Neither was able to be present at the party last evening, and the cup will remain at the club during the year. In a letter to Mrs McLaren, Mrs Andersen, who is now 83, recalled the early days of the club, the memory of which was still vivid CURRENT NOTES Mr and Mrs A. K. Firth and Miss Barbara Firth (formerly of Circuit street) will leave New Zealand today by the Dominion Monarch to make their home in England. Mr Kenneth Murray and Mrs Murray (Geanies, Fearn. Ross-shire) will arrive in Christchurch today for a visit of about four days. Mr Murray is a prominent banker. He is a member of Her Majesty’s Bodyguard of Scotland (Royal Company of Archers)Mr and Mrs Murray are making a tour of the Commonwealth.

Mrs Walter Radford, a former resident of Christchurch who has been living in America for the last few years, returned to Christchurch this week and is staying at the United Service hotel.

Mr Robert Young, who for nearly lour years has been producer for the Canterbury Repertory Society, and Mrs Young will leave Christchurch toaay for the North Island, where they will visit Rotorua and Auckland. At the end of the month they will leave for Australia on their return journey to England.

Mrs Christie and Miss Marshall will arrive in Christchurch today from Wanganui and will stay with Mrs Neil Christie, Fendalton, before going to stay with Mrs Christie s son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs Peter Markham, Te Oka, Banks Peninsula.

Mrs C. E. Boon ’Cashmere) will leave New Zealand today by the Dominion Monarch for a holiday tour of Australia.

Miss E. A. Prebble (Stanmore road) returned yesterday to Christchurch after a visit to England, Scotland, Ireland. and Europe. Mrs J. N. O’Shea has been appointed head of the mathematics department at the .Rangiora High School. Miss I. Ayley has been appointed to the teaching staff of the school.

Mr and Mrs T. W. Churchward (Blenheim), who have been visiting England, will return to Marlborough soon.

Miss Joyce Satchell. who left Christchurch several months ago for a holiday visit overseas, left England last week in the Tamaroa on her return journey.

Mrs A. Rees, dietitian at the Christchurch Public Hospital, has returned from extended leave of absence overseas and has recommenced duty. Miss Brigid Haydon, Second Secretary in the Office of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom, will leave Wellington on completion of her tour of duty on December 30. She will be succeeded by Miss Margaret Archer, M.B.E. Miss Archer, who is 3 J and a graduate of Birmingham University, served as a welfare officer at the Telecommunications Research Establishment during the war. Sh2 subsequently did similar work with the Ministry of Education From October 1949. when she joined the Commonwealth Relations Office, until January of this year, she was on th? staff of the High Commissioner for the United Kingdom in New Delhi. Miss Archer is due to arrive at Auckland, by on January 27. Mi.-s R. Weston was. appointed dietitian in charge of the Christchurch hospital nurses’ home at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. Miss N. James was appointed assistant second assistant relieving tutor dietitian.

An evening social arranged by the members of the Linwood Methodist Church was held recently in the Sunday School Hall to bid farewell to the Rev. H. E. and Mrs Harkness, who after seven years’ ministry, have been transferred to take charge of the Blenheim circuit. Speakers paid tribute to the excellent work of Mr Harkness in both church and Sunday school affairs. During the evening a humorous recitation was given by Mrs G. Bielby, after which presentations were made to Mr and Mrs Harkness by the Linwood and Wainoni Church representatives. Leave of absence to study hospital work overseas was granted Mrs I. Lough by the North Canterbury Hospital Board at its meeting yesterday. Mrs Lough plants to travel in Europe and study the hospital care of geriatric cases and the welfare of the aged in European countries. She will begin her year’s leave on January 1. Mrs Lough, who gives a part-time clerical service to Burwood Hospital, conducts the patients’ library for the Hospital Lady Visitor-’ Association. She is also responsible for the production of the “Burwood Hospital Bulletin.” At Bishop Julius Hoste] last evening. Mrs M. C. Hendrie entertained the members of the Y.W.C.A-. World Fellowship committee, of which she is president. This was the last of a series of enjoyable Christmas parties organised by the Y.W.C.A. clubs. A “mad-hatters” dance, organised by the combined clubs, with Miss Beverley Bambury as convener, resulted in £45 being sent to Korea to heln equip Y.W.C.A. hostels in Pusan and Seoul. Miss H. Burnett has resigned from the occupational therapy department of the Christchurch Public Hospital. Members of the Bryndwr Ladies’ Glee Circle held an enjoyable Christmas party at the home of Mrs M.
