CARDBOARD CONTAINERS

Sir, —America and Scandinavia may have a type of cardboard which does not taint food. Cream collected upon cardboard caps directly removed has an aoiik and distinctly cardboard flavour. Fruit in contact with cardboard suffers accordingly. Even pastry unprotected can be contaminated by contact with cardboard. Are not the metal caps provided for the purpose of avoiding cardboard? Are there no metal caps suitable for wide-necked bottles?—Yours, etc., WAYS AND MEANS. December 16, 1953.

HOUSING AT ARTHUR’S PASS Sir.—The National Government is making a mistake in urging people to build houses at Arthur’s Pass. These houses will mostly be unoccupied for 10 months in the year. There is a shortage of houses all over the country, except at Arthur’s Pass. Since the Natiohal Government got into power the Tawera County Council has more than doubled its rates to l eas ®’ holders at the pass, for which rates it gives little or no service. The Main Highways Board maintains the road at the pass. It seems like a mutual arrangement between the Lands Department and the Tawera County Council to have more leaseholders to exploit. The Valuation Department doubled the values of shacks at the pass, which are unoccupied for 10 months in the year. Some pressure was probably brought to bear on the department by some politicians. Only the very wealthy can afford to build at the pass now.—Yours, etc., PASS. December 16, 1953.
