SAP TIMBER FOR HOUSES
AUCKLAND PROPOSAL PRAISED (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 15. The full use of treated sap timber in house building may be permitted in Auckland within the next three months if a by-law prepared by the Auckland Municipal Works Guild is adopted by metropolitan local bodies. It is believed that most, if not all, local bodies will approve the by-law. Its adoption could mean a reduction in costs of house building. The by-law is being prepared at the request of toe Local Bodies’ Association. “It is a realistic approach to the unbalanced timber supply position,’’ said Mr R. Savory, a member of the housing committee set up recently by the Minister of Housing (Mr W. Sullivan). The guild advocates treating 11 kinds of sap timbers and allowing their use in 11 parts of house construction. After exhaustive experiments. the guild considers that treated sap timber is as good as heart timber, with the advantage that it is protected.
