The highest estimated lambing percentage ever recorded and a record numoer of breeding ewes for 1953 were announced by the Minister of Agriculture (Mr K. J. Holyoake) today. The estimated lambing percentage of 97.35 is .87 above the previous highest, 96.48 in 1949. Breeding ewes reached a total of 23.781.376. compared with the previous highest figure of 22,963,346 last year. The North Island estimated lambin percentage of 96.24 is a record, but for the South Island the estimate is slightly below the highest figure, recorded in 1949. “These figures are striking evidence of the efforts being made by farmers to increase primary production,’* said Mr Holyoake. “Exports of the increased livestock products, such as meat and wool they represent, will benefit all sections of the community.”
