PRIZE-GIVING CEREMONIES

AVONSIDE GIRLS’ HIGH SCHOOL The prizes of a school were an Indication and a symbol of the corporate effort of a school, said the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) at the annual prize-giving ceremony of the Avonside Girls' High School in the Civic Theatre last evening. Dean Sullivan urged the pupils of the school to remember their debt to the staff that had had the ability to inspire them. “You must remember also that you have been engaged in learning to equip yourself for the business of living and in the course of that you have been trained how to occupy your leisure hours seriously and recreatively,” he said. Commenting on the school’s lack of an assembly hall, Dean Sullivan said that it was essential that every secondary school had an adequate hall. He thought it was the most important place in the school, because it was the one place in which all could gather. During the evening items were given by the school orchestra, by the junior choir, and by the school’s special choir. Prizes and trophies were presented by Mrs Sullivan.
