PHYSICAL WELFARE BRANCH

ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION OPPOSES CLOSING (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 2. The New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will send a deputation to the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. A. Bodkin) to ask him to reconsider the closing of the physical welfare branch of the Internal Affairs Department, scheduled to take place in March. The association’s management committee received a letter from the department last night explaining that the branch was being closed because it was felt that its work was not the function of the Government. “A number of districts are closed already,” the letter said, “and branches are working at reduced strength in other areas. Where officers are still stationed certain athletic work has been carried out, but it is not possible to say how long this can be continued.” The meeting also decided to notify the New Zealand Olympic and British Empire Games Association of the step and invite other national sporting bodies to give their support.
