CAPTAIN W. RAYMOND, OF CHRISTCHURCH (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, December 2. Captain W. Raymond, co-pilot of the Heron aircraft in which the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh will fly from Rotorua to Gisborne and back to Napier, is one of the National Airways corporation’s most experienced captains. He joined the corporation in 1948, after extensive wartime service, and since then has flown all types of aircraft on air routes throughout New Zealand. When the Heron service from Wellington to Blenheim and Nelson was inaugurated early this year he was one of the pilots selected to operate it. Captain Raymond is 34, was bom at Christchurch, and was educated at Christ’s College. He worked as a clerk for three years until the outbreak of the war, when he joined the Royal Air Force. During his seven and a half years’ service, part of which was spent in the Royal New Zealand Air Force, he flew a wide range of aircraft, including Whitney bombers, Hurricanes, Spitfires, Blen= heims. Tempests, Typhoons, Mustangs, and Dakotas.
