N.S.W. BILL TO CURB PRESS

PASSAGE THROUGH COUNCIL SYDNEY, December 1. The Sydney City Council (Disclosure of Allegations) Bill passed through all stages in the Legislative Council early this morning. The bill compels newspapers and members of the public to disclose the sources of information on corrupt practices in the City Council. During the debate, Mr A. D. Bridges, an Opposition member of the Legislative Council, named two Labour aidermen who, he said, had allegedly extorted tribute from council employees for whom they had found jobs or gained promotion. Mr Bridges also alleged that a former Labour aiderman had an interest in city barrew licences. The aiderman denied the allegations.
