CRITICISM OF McCARTHY

“ Has Reduced U.S. Prestige ” (Rec. 7 p.m.) BOMBAY, November 30. Mr Emanuel Celler, a Democrat member of the United States House of Representatives said in Bombay today that Senator McCarthy had greatly reduced the prestige of America in the eyes of the world. He asked Indians not to take Com-munist-hunting by Senator McCarthy too seriously. Mr Celler, who is on a tour of the Middle East and South Asia, said at a press conference that Senator McCarthy could do no harm in the United States itself “because people there know him well and would not take seriously to his stunts.”

Reported Ambitions There was amjlle evidence that some distinguished mqmbers of the Eisenhower Administration believed Senator McCarthy was aiming at a 1956 Republican presidential nomination, Mr Lyle Wilson, Washington manager of the United Press, said today, according to a Washington message. It appeared that the Administration was not ready for an open break with the senator. Its strategy seemed based on the idea that if he was given enough rope he would hang himself.
