AFTERNOON PARTY
80 GUESTS ENTERTAINED Two members of the executive committee of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand League for the Hard of Hearing have, during the year, arranged fortnightly meetings on Tuesday afternoons for members of the league, especially for those who do not care to go out at night to attend the regular Friday night meetings. These two members—Mrs M. Smerdon and Miss L. Pike —regularly arrange programmes for the entertainment of the members or they organise games which are particularly popular and greatly enjoyed. Yesterday Mrs Smerdon and Miss Pike arranged the final games afternoon meeting of the year and themselves provided and served a Christmas afternoon tea to about 80 guests. Before tea Mr C. Campin expressed members’ deep gratitude to the three members of the staff —Miss E. M. Ash. Miss E. Eowntree, and Miss M. S. Johnston — and Mrs Smerdon presented each with a handsome Christmas gift. Mrs J. H. Reynolds, who has long been a staunch friend to the league and who was a guest of honour at the party yesterday, presented posies to Miss Pike and Mrs Smerdon. and thanked them for their hospitality. MORNING TEA PARTY MRS W. A. SMITH HONOURED Mrs W. A. Smith (Fendalton), who will leave Christchurch on Friday with Mr Smith to make their home in Wellington, was the guest of honour at a morning tea party, given at the National Club rooms yesterday by the women’s auxiliary of the Navy League. Mr and Mrs Smith have for the last six years lived in Christchurch, where Mr Smith has been manager of the ocal branch of the Union Steam Shin Company. During that time Mrs Smith las been an energetic and capable nember of the women’s auxiliary, and has been most generous in giving time and thought to its interests. Yesterday on behalf of members. Mrs H. Wyatt (president of the auxiliary) thanked Mrs Smith for her support, -nd wished her health and happiness in he future. As a memento of her association with the auxiliary. Mrs Smith was presented with a bonk in which each member signed her name. Mrs Smith said she had greatly eninyed her work for the Navy League and £vould retain happy memories of her %Uow members of the auxiliary. ENGAGEMENTS (Engagements Notices must be signed by both parties.) The engagement is announced of Dulcie, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs C. R. Bown, to Peter, son of Mr. L. J. B. Chapple, Southbridge. Mr and Mrs W. Suttie announce the engagement of their younger daughter. June Marleen, to lan James, elder son of Mr and Mrs E. J. Miles. The engagement is announced of Malcolm Harold, fourth son of Mr and Mrs H. H. Haines. Richmond, to Kathleen Joan, only daughter of Mrs and the late Mr W. B. Wood, Fendalton.
CHILDREN TO TAKE PART IN GREAT CHRISTMAS PAGEANT ! All boys and girls over eight years of age are invited to take part in the Fancy Dress section of Hay's Great Christmas Pageant, which takes place on Saturday next, leaving the Christchurch Railway Station at 11.30. Entries for this section of the grand procession are invited to present themselves to Aunt Haysi at the Railway Station no later than 10.45 on Saturday. Choose your own Fancy Dress and arrive at the starting point all ready to join in what will surely be Hays biggest Christmas pageant ever. Last year it estimated that some 60,000 to 70,000 boys and girls and parents lined the streets to see this Pageant, which has now become traditional in Canterbury.
