TELEVISION IN U.S.

UNIVERSITY LECTURER’S CRITICISM (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 30. Television is the eighth horror of the world, in the opinion of an Auckland University College lecturer, Mr John Reid, who has returned to New Zealand after visiting the United States as a Fulbright Scholar. He said that moronic programmes, scaled down to the lowest intellectual level, advertised beer, cigarettes, and cosmetics with tasteless vulgarity. “Television is irresponsibly exploited by commercial sponsors,” he said. “The only hope for it is the developing of educational television on non-commer-cial networks. The worst British films of 15 years ago are shown on television, because film-makers won’t allow films made less than seven years ago to be screened on TV.”
