INSPECTION AT AIRPORTS
MEDICAL EXAMINATION SUSPENDED (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, November 30. The customary medical inspection for passengers arriving in New Zealand by air from Sydney has been suspended. This is a sequel to Jan arrangement between the Department of Health and the Commonwealth quarantine . authorities whereby Australia keeps New Zealand fully informed of any air traveller who should be kept under a similar service to Australia. It has long been felt that, as Australian and New Zealand health problems are very similar, the inspection, particularly for air travellers, was unnecessary. if an epidemic broke out in Australia, of course, a port doctor would again be in regular attendance till the danger of its spreading to New Zealand was past. Under the World Health Organisation’s epidemicological services New Zealand receives prompt information about the outbreak of epidemics overseas. As a result, it would be easy to re-establish a medical inspection to keep under observation persons arriving from countries in which epidemics had broken out. Britain, Eire, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Belgium, and France, by agreement, have also done away with the medical inspection of air passengers arriving from the others of the countries named.
