OUTSTANDING CAREER « IN SPORT (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. November 30. Mrs A. Jaffaney, a well-known Otago woman cricketer and administrator. has probably established a world record among women players. Now in her sixty-fourth year, she is still playing cricket with the Albany Ladies’ Club's senior team after nearly 50 years’ association with the game. Mrs Gaffaney has headed the Albany club’s batting and bowling averages several times "in recent years. She represented Otago for many years, and as recently as 1949 played representative cricket. Mrs Gaffaney learned her cricket in Westport, and represented Buller as a schoolgirl and on other occasions until her departure for Wanganui. She also played representative hockey for

Taranaki and Wellington. Several years ago she was one of the first to be made a life member of the -New Zealand Women’s Cricket Council. She still bowls well. On Saturday she took seven wickets for 12 runs in a senior game. As a fielder she can still put many of the younger cricketers to shame. Mrs Gaffaney has been playing senior women's cricket, in Dunedin ever since the game was introduced here in 1930, being originally a member of the Grange Women's Cricket Club. Sporting Family Her three daughters have also played cricket—lmelda was an Otago senior representative, and Eileen a junior representative. Mrs Gaffaney has played in the same club team with her three daughters and also a granddaughter. Her youngest daughter Pat, is a wellknown Otago representative player in botn indoor and outdoor basketball. Mrs Gaffaney belongs to a noted sporting family, her brothers all having represented Buller at Rugby, and her younger sister played hockey for Buller. Wanganui, and Taranaki. Mrs Gaffaney played in the same hockey team as her mother, sister, and niece. Mrs Gaffaney was also official accompanist for the Buller Band, and took part in manv New Zealand championships with its soloists, four of her brothers being soloists in that band. She was captain of the Wanganui Ladies’ Surf Club beiore World War I. She was also the roller-skating champion of West Coast and Buller. Mrs Gaffaney served for about three years during World War II in the W.A.A.F. at Taieri. having understated her age 16 years to enlist. Her husband was also a keen sportsman, playing for the Dunedin Football Club in 1898-99 until injuries caused his retirement. He then joined the original Dunedin harriers. and also ran with the Wellington and Wanganui harriers. Mr Gaffaney was also well known as an administrator in boxing, swimming, and athletics while stationed in Wanganui and Taranaki.

Mr and Mrs N. Edwards, Christchurch, have pleasure in announcing the engagement of their daughter. Noeline Ann, to Peter, second son of Mrs and the late Mr F. J. Hailes, Kaikoura.
