Mrs G. H. Ross, Minister for Social Welfare, will leave Wellington tomorrow, accompanied by her private secretary (Miss Mansfield), for Dunedin. They will arrive in Christchurch on Friday, and leave for Wellington the following evening. Dr and Mrs L. R. Chapman and their two children are returning to New Zealand in the Rangitoto, and will arrive in Sumner tomorrow. Dr. Chapman has been overseas for 18 months and has obtained his diploma of clinical pathology.

Miss Mary Glasson, daughter of Mr and Mrs J. H. Glasson, of Sumner, who has been visiting Britain and Europe, is expected to arrive in Wellington by the Rangitoto tomorrow.

Miss Rona Faville, who has been visiting Britain, Europe and the United States during the last two and a half years, will arrive in Christchurch this morning. She will be the guest of her sister. Mrs A. M. Satterthwaite, “Waipuna,” Clyde road, for several weeks.

The homemakers’ group of the Catholic Women’s League held their Christmas party at “MaryknOll.” Cashel street, last evening. The guests enjoyed a programme by the league's choir, under the leadership of Mrs RBoswell, and community singing of carols Miss M. Harrison demonstrated the making of soft toys. A talk entitled “Christmas in the Home” was given by the Rev. Father Perry, S.J. Members were .asked to entertain in their homes children from St Joseph’s Home on one Sunday a month. Mesdames P. Mrs F. E. Burrell, president of the Papanui sub-centre of the Red Cross Society, entertained about 30 members at a Christmas party held at her home. Harewood road, yesterday. At the business meeting before the party, it was reported that during last month members helped with the Good Neighbour Service and also packed clothes for the CORSO appeal. Mrs R. GiHespie presided at the November meeting of the Cust sub-centre of the R<°d Cross Society, and reported that the sum of £5 10s had been raised at a bring and buy stall held recently. Goods for the Good Neighbour Scheme were handed in. also 25 garments to be forwarded to the centre. Notice was given of a concert by local artists early in December. It was also announced that the Junior Red Cross would be holding a garden party again this year at the home of Mrs F. Kingsbury and members were asked for their support. It was decided to forward Christmas donations as follows: —10s to the elderly women patients at Burwood Hospital and 5s to Rannerdale Home. Mrs F. Early, representing Cust. and Mrs May, West. Eyreton. agreed to ’’isit Junior Red Cross' groups at Springbank. Cust, West Eyreton and Swannanoa Schools, in place of Miss Mehftens.

The Shirley Methodist Sunday School celebrated its anniversary with special services in the church on Sunday. The services were conducted by the Rev. D. B. Gordon (morning). Mr G. Hill (afternoon) and the Rev. R E. Patchett (evening). Sundav school scholars formed the large choir which was conducted by Mr E. Cumberpatch. Piano and organ accompaniments were played bv Mrs T. Coomber and Mr J. Salkeld.

The final meeting of the year of the Redcliffs-Mount Pleasant sub-centre of the Red Cross Society was held at the home of Mrs E. W. White. Bay. Mrs W. Tisch, the president, thanked the members for their help in the various activities during the year. The following donations were made:—Disabled Servicemen’s Comfort Fun. £10; disaster relief. £5 and £6 special donation; the Mayor of Swansea for necessitous cases. £3O: assessment to North Canterbury centre, £lO and £5 in addition; local Junior Red Cross. £2 2s; Good Neighbour Service Christmas dinners, £5: for Christmas gifts to women patients at Burwood Hospital and inmates at Rannerdale Home. 15s. A quantity of knitted and sewn clothing was Handed in to be sent overseas and new material was distributed for making into children’s clothing. Everything a gift at Dreamwear.
