MEETING AT OMOTO
WHITECOMBE JACK WINS HANDICAP
IMPRESSIVE VICTORY TO ACCOUNTANT
(From Our Own Reporter) h< GREYMOUTH, November 30. ° The leader throughout, Whitecombe K Jack, gave nothing else a chance in T the principal event and first leg of te the double, the Anniversary Handi- h cap, on the second day of the Grey- H mouth Jockey Club's meeting today. u: The meeting was held in fine, sunny c ' weather, though there was only a . moderate attendance for Anniversary h Day. The track was heavier than on f( the first day, and this tended to upset p form calculations. tl The winning doubles combination, n Whitecombe Jack-Wise Belle, returned b £35 15s for £l. ? The totalisator handled on course 11 £13,420, including £llB9 on the a double, compared with £17,905 10s on h the corresponding day last year. The t total for the meeting was £23,041, a compared with £37,683 last year. o Whitecombe Jack was followed out t from an even dispatch in the Anniver- q sary Handicap bv Quarry, Escalado, Ro- b anne, Marut, and Robbie. Racing into I the back. Whitecombe Jack was several lengths clear of Quarry, with Escalado. j Roanne Marut, and Robbie next. c Whitecombe Jack further increased his lead at the home turn, and. galloping free- c ly, came home an easy winner by three 1 lengths from Quarry. Robbie was six , lengths away, third, and then followed Marut and Escalado, with the favourite t and first-day winner, Roanne, bringing up j. the rear. . c A member of L. H. Pratt’s Oran team, Whitecombe Jack was at surprisingly short odds in view of his previous moderate efforts. He is an aged gelding by Royal Chief from Gold Lily, and races in the interests of Mr J. Aitcheson. Maiden Winners Mister Pip and Teresa Gamba left maiden ranks when they won their divisions of the Trial Stakes. Mister Pip ran right away near the end of the first division, and beat Tireless by six lengths, easing up. There was another gap of four lengths to Rohan June, and then came Aglow and Blonde Peak. Owned by Mr and Mrs C. P. Agar, Mister Pip is a bold type of ! galloper. A three-year-old gelding by - Newtown Pippin from Lady Eve, he is trained by G. R. Pelling at Riccarton. ; Teresa Gamba also led throughout in the second division to beat Claredawn by i a length. There was a gap of eight ; lengths to Air Comfort, and then came - Hurry Up, Yorick, Silver Sandal, and Lama j a. ■ Teresa Gamba also promises to improve her record. She is a three-year-old filly by Cassock from Fearless, and is trained at Riccarton by E. W. Rosewarne for Mr R. J. Scholium. Freddy attempted to lead throughout in the Railway Hack Handicap, but though he had a commanding lead with four furlongs to run, he quickly compounded. Algaro then took over, and galloped on well to win comfortably by three lengths from Elsie Mary, with a similar gap to the fast-finishing Kandahar. Miss Metric, Farleigh, Owl’s Way. and Freddy were next. Algaro was placed on the first day, and showed improvement in the heavier going. A four-year-old gelding by Lo Zingaro from Royal Coat. Algaro is trained at Waimate by- W. Barr, jun., for Mr C. D. Cochrane. Accountant Impresses Not produced on the opening day. the dual Westport winner. Accountant, which was having his first start since that club’s meeting, was at cramped odds for the Runanga Hack Handicap. He justified the support by winning by three lengths easing up from Jesse James, with Tireless just shading Winning Gold for third placing, six lengths back. Then came Miss Sunshine, Little Gem, and Eastern Friend, vzith Atlantic Queen well down the track. Accountant was followed through to the far turn by Eastern Friend. At that stage Winning Gold and Jesse James were handiest of the remainder. Jesse - James and Winning Gold set out after the leader, but made no impression. Accountant, though not partial to soft going, looked a picture. He was undoubtedly the outstanding performer at the meeting. Though she ran off the course and lost considerable ground when in the lead going out of the straight. Wise Belle soon regained her position in the role of pacemaker and easily won the Ahaura Hack Handicap by two lengths from Elsie Mary. Gold Stage just held off Lights On for third, four lengths further back. Weewyn. Prim Lady, Sovereign Salute, and Claredawn were next. Wise Belle was soon a clear leader from Fortement, Sovreign Salute, Elsie Mary, Weewyn, and Gold Stage. Wise Belle was well clear into the straight and won easily. Wise Belle revelled in the going, and but for her self-imposed handicap in running wide, would have , won by a much greater margin.
The quickly-drying track and a lucky run through on the inside near the finish enabled Tarawingee to win the Farewell Hack Handicap. Blonde Peak raced away to a good lead from Adowa, Super Duper, Double Paper, Tarawingee, Teal, and Canyon Maid. The order was unchanged until the straight where Tarawingee came through on the inside to establish a winning margin of one length over Blonde Peak. Super Duper was a close third, ahead of Adowa. Scrum, Teal, Blue Star, and Eastward Ho. Tarawingee was an easy winner at Reefton, and ran third in the concluding event on the opening day. She has done well since being taken over on lease by the Kaiata trainer, C. J. Walsh. Results:— TRIAL STAKES, of £120; five furlongs and a half—First Division: 2,2 MISTER PIP 8-0 G. W.
