MAYOR’S COAL AND BLANKET FUND

CONCERN AT POSSIBLE DUPLICATION OF WORK “I am concerned that there should be no duplication of the activities of the fund, the established organisation in its field, and the Red Cross,” said the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) at a meeting of the Mayor’s Coal and Blanket Fund yesterday. Mr Macfarlane was commenting on an executive report of the fund’s workings since May, in which concern was expressed lest there be confusion between the fund and the Red Cross appeal for blankets. The fund had been doing the work for years and had facilities for checking that all applications were from deserving cases, said Mr Macfarlane. “Some people are likely to put it over any organisation they can. We must be sure that the people who get assistance are the people who need it,” he said. Mr Macfarlane suggested that the fund could probably help the Red Cross in Christchurch by making available a list of persons already helped.
