MOUNTAINEERING SAFETY

PUBLIC LECTURE IN CHRISTCHURCH As part of the safety campaign being conducted by the Federated Mountain Clubs of New Zealand, the Canterbury Mountaineering Club will hold a lecture on high-country climbing, stalking and ski-ing in Christchurch tomorrow evening. For the lecture, which will be held on one night only, six experienced mountaineers will speak on aspects of high-country climbing. Divided into five 20-minute talks, the lecture will begin with a talk on the approach to mountains and lowcountry tramping by Mr S. C. V. Muirson. The president of the North Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Deerstalkers’ Association (Mr F. Eade) will speak on the use of rifles and the hunting of game. Highcountry tramping will be covered by Mr G. Flower, a past president of the Canterbury Mountaineering Club, and ski-ing will be dealt with by Mr Neil Hamilton. The subject of high-country climbing is to be taken by Mr G. Harrow, who has been selected for the New Zealand expedition to the Himalayas next year, and the lecture will be concluded with a short address by Mr E. Cotter, who was a member of the New Zealand expedition led by Mr H. E. Rid diford to the Himalayas in 1951.
