ORPHANS’ PICNIC

OUTING TO WAIKUKU Saturday was a big day for the children from all orphanages in Christchurch, who were the guests of the Automobile Association (Canterbury) at the annual outing which has been held each year since 1910. More than 550 boys and girls were entertained at Waikuku Domain, 110 motor-cars and two buses being used to take the children and their attendants on the trip. Soft drinks, sweets, and ice cream were in plentiful supply and found many willing and capable consumers. This year toys for every boy and girl are being sent direct to the homes instead of being distributed at the picnic. During the afternoon a sports meeting was held, the main competition being for the Peter Harvey Memorial Shield for junior and senior boys’ relay races.
