OBITUARY
MR W. E. KNOWLES The death occurred recently at Matarawa, near Masterton. of Mr William Ernest Knowles, well known as a former Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay Rugby representative and as a member of the dairy industry. Born at Dalefield in 1899, Mr , Knowles was connected with the dairying industry all his life, managing various dairy factories in the North Island. While manager of the Kaiparoro cheese factory he achieved , the highest cheese grading points registered in New Zealand, a record that remains unequalled. Mr Knowles represented Wairarapa at Rugby on many occasions between 1917 and 1924. He also played representative Rugby for Hawke’s Bay and representative hockey for Bush districts. Since 1919 Mr Knowles had been a member of the Druids’ Lodge and a member of the Masonic Order since 1922. He was a Past Master of St. Mark’s Lodge, Carterton, and a Past First Principal of the Wairarapa Royal Arch Chapter. . Mr Knowles is survived by his wife and two sons. MR E. G. FOSTER The death has occurred at Lower Hutt of Mr Ellice Guise Foster. Mr Foster was educated at Christ’s College, Christchurch, and the School of Engineering, Canterbury University College. He worked for the Christchurch Tramway Board, the Auckland Electric Tramway Company and the Invercargill municipal tramways and electricity department before joining Cory-Wright and Salmon, Ltd., of Wellington, in 1925. He was made a director of the company in 1947. In 1904, Mr Foster won the New Zealand University mile championship in 4min 40sec. Mr Foster is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter. MR HAMUERA NGARIMU (New Zealand Press Association) GISBORNE, November 30. Mr Hamuera Ngarimu, father of the World War II Maori Victoria Cross winner, Lieutenant Moananui-a-kiwa Ngarimu, died in the Cook Public Hospital, Gisborne, on Saturday, after a short illness. He was 57. Mr Ngarimu was one of the leaders of the Ngatiporou tribe in the Waiapu Valley. He was chairman of the Ngatiporou Co-operative Dairy Company, and of several Maori block communities. Educated at Te Aute College, he was one of the first Maori students at the Hawkesbury > Agricultural College, New South Wales. He is survived by his widow, three i sons, and eight daughters.
