NEW VICAR OF ST. JOHN’S
THE REV. D. D. THORPE The Rev. D. D. Thorpe, vicar of Cashmere Hills (St. Augustine’s Anglican Church) will succeed the Rev. H. L. R. Isherwood as the vicar of St. John’s Church, Latimer square. He will take up his position in January
from Mr Isherwood, who will become chaplain to St. Peter’s School, Cambridge. Mr Thorpe received his theological training at College House, Christchurch, and graduated bachelor of arts from Canterbury University College in 1932. In that year he was ordained deacon and left to hold a curateship at Timaru for two years. He became a priest in 1933 and in the following year was appointed vicar of Banks Peninsula. He held this position until he became vicar of Westland in 1937. He was chaplain to the forces with the 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force from 1940 to 1943, and before returning to Christchurch was chaplain to Southwell School at Hamilton. Mr Thorpe has been vicar of Cashmere Hills since 1945.
