QUEEN’S VISITS TO RACES

Dr. Soper “Welcomed

As A Comic”

LONDON, November 23. “We are short of good, comics, these days. So I welcome joyously the contribution of Dr. Donald Soper, president of the Methodist Conference, to the national gaiety,” says John Gordon in the “Sunday Express,” commenting on Dr. Soper’s disapproval of the Queen’s visfts to race meetings. “Why not make a complete job of it, Dr. Soper? “Tell the Queen that she must sit at home at night, pull down the blinds, mix herself a nice cup of cocoa, and while away the hours till bedtime with a fat volume of Soper sermons. “Could life offer richer happiness?” Another Methodist clergyman, the Rev. George Artingsall, speaking at Sheffield last night, dissociated himself and many Methodists from Dr. Soper’s criticism. He said: “Many Methodist people have been disturbed by the presidents remarks. These remarks were unfair, unnecessary, and at the same time harmful to our standing as a loyal body. “Dr. Soper doesn’t speak for the majority of Methodists.”
