EDUCATION BOARD CANDIDATES
MEETINGS WITH SCHOOL COMMITTEES SOUGHT
A suggestion from the Prebbleton School Committee that for election to the Canterbury Education Board should speak to a central meeting of school committees is not supported by the board. A letter received from the committee at yesterday’s meeting of the board said that at its October meeting the advisability of having some personal contact with candidates for the board was discussed. It was considered that the present system of voting for a person who in many cases had been neither seen nor heard, was unsatisfactory. The chairman (Mr S. J. Irwin) said the secretary (Mr L. S. P. Butcher) had replied to the letter that, while it was agreed that school committee members should have every opportunity to see and hear candidates, it could not be a function of the board to assist any candidate in his election campaign beyond making school buildings available for meetings. Any organised arrangements would have to be made by the school committees concerned.
The action of Mr Butcher in replying to tne letter was approved.
