CANTERBURY CUP TO BE RUN TOMORROW

RACING

Red Jester Will Be Firm Favourite FIELDS FOR SECOND DAY AT RICCARTON Red Jester, the handsome Hastings-trained Red Mars horse, will be at cramped odds in the Canterbury Cup at Riccarton tomorrow, but his appearance will be a big attraction for the second day of the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Cup meeting. In the nine-horse field are Mr W. S. Goosman’s well-performed md hardy six-year-old Hutton; the Riccarton-trained Valescure, one of the best staying three-year-olds last season, and a fair fourth in the New Zealand Cup on Saturday; the Wingatui-trained Lancaster, which carried 101 b overweight into second place behind Gold Scheme in the Cup; and Idaho and Bahrein, which finished first and third in the New Zealand Derby on the first day of the meeting. The material is there for a good race, but Red Jester is a horse of class and should win. Red Jester was no match for the great Dalray in the New Zealand Derby two years ago but he won the Canterbury Cup in a weaker field at the same meeting. He will not be breaking new ground if he wins the old-established race for a second time—that has been done often—but Kindergarten and Royal Chief, the last two to record double successes, won in successive years. Red Jester did not run in the Canterbury Cup, won by My Hero, last year. Hutton has raced eight times so far The fields are:— this season without improving his win- 11-2 a.m.—

ning record, but over a mile and a half he may go closer to winning than he did in two of the big mile handicaps at the Wellington spring meeting. He opposed Red Jester in the Wainui Handicap on the first day at Trentham. He carried 9st ITb into fifth place. Red Jester carried half a stone more and won easily.

Hutton’s other appearance at the meeting was in the Pearce Handicap on Labour Day. He finished strongly in a big field for seventh, close behind the minor place-getters. That day Red Jester provided a highlight of the meeting by running Mr Goosman’s champion, Gendarme, to a short head in the weigh t-for-age Harcourt Stakes. The three-year-olds Idaho and Bahrein may be the pick of the others at weight-for-age, and as in the Derby, Idaho should again beat Bahrein, though the latter may still be improving.

Pensacola, Bhutan, and Red Jester have been the only successful three-year-olds in the last 10 years. Idaho's task of attempting to improve that record looks formidable, but it will be surprising if he fails to fill one of the places. Overboard did not ease his task in the Derby by giving the others a start from the barrier. He made up good p round for a close sixth, a position he could improve on. Valescure was My Hero’s only serious challenger in this race a year ago. He is hardy and consistent and though he was beaten by Lancaster in the New Zealand Cup he could be the Wingatui horse’s master at weight-for-age if his hard race in the twomiler has not left its mark.

First Deg of Double Coaltown. with 9-0, heads a capacity field for the Fendalton Handicap, the first leg of the double. He has had three races this season and has improved each time. Last start he finished eighth in the Pea-ce Handicap at Trentham. and he should finish closer up in this field. Coaltown sprinted attractively with Silver King yesterday, and these two will jneet tomorrow. Silver King’s trial was a vastly improved one on his gallop last Thursday. In his latest gallop he showed something of his real ability, and his fastfinishing . unlucky sixth in the Pearce Handicap the last time he raced gives him a chance tomorrow. Royal Voyages performance will deEend on the way he has come through is run in the Cup, in which he finished in the middle of the field after showing up wide out on the home turn. He v-ould have his chance at his best.

Te Kooti could be the improver in the field. He has raced three times since his long, enforced spell and showed improvement to finish eighth in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday after being in front on the home turn. Under 8-6 he would be a possibility if he recaptured

Sidra beat Wally French over a mile and a quarter at Otaki last month and was also successful over this distance in the Islington Handicap at the Grand National meeting. She is consistent and game, and may be a better prospect in the middle of the handicap than Golden Jest and First Degree, which had hard races in the New Zealand Cup. Cash and Commodore are the wellperformed North Island horses which contested the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday. Cash was the runner-up to Bosky, and Commodore finished close up. sixth.

The last time he raced over a mile and a quarter Cash ran second in the T. H. Lowry Memorial Handicap at Hastings. That day he carried 8-0. 31b more than his weight in this field. Two starts earlier he won over a mile and a quarter at Wanganui under 7-12. In his present form Cash should be hard to beat from his place in the handicap. Commodore was not quite at his best on Saturday, and a better guide should be his fourth behind Gold Scheme, Finito, and Programme in the Watkins Handicap, 11 furlongs, at Trentham. and his second to Red Jester in the Wainui Handicap on the first day of the meeting. Poetical, which lost his chance early in the Riccarton Handicap on the first day of the meeting, will also be a force to reckon with from his place in the weights. He raced like an early winner fn the Watkins Handicap at Trentham.

The Second Leg Silence and Tesla are expected to dominate the finish of the Jockey Club Handicap, the second leg of the aouble. Silence has met lesla twice previously oxer the distance this season. Tesla carried 8-0 into a second place m tne Winter Cup on the first aay of the Grand National meeting. Silence. with 331 b more, finished strongly for sixth after beginning slowly. Silence won the Selwyn Handicap, seven furlongs, on the second day of the meeting, with the result that he had 10-13 to carry and was conceding Tesla 371 b when the latter won the August Handicap on the third day of the meeting. Again Silence finished strongly for sixth, after beginning slowly. Silence showed that he was right at his best when he finished brilliantly for fourth after tailing off early in the Stewards’ Handicap on Saturday. Tesla’s effort to finish close up sixth was not so spectacular, but he had to come from well back to finish as close as he did to the placed horses. Tesla usually begins more smartly than Silence, and that will help him against the Wingatui horse in this big field. Wally French, third in the Riccarton Handicap and a good fourth in the Wellington Racing Club’s Pearce Handicap at his previous start, is expected to do best of the others above 8-0. Of those below Tesla in the weights. Desperado and Bosky have the best form, and Lord Rowallan should be the best of those on the minimum. Desperado has raced well but without much luck this season. He was a close sixth after beginning slowly in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday and was an unlucky fifth in the Pearce Handicap at Trentham on Labour Day. Lord Rowallan was one of the unlucky runners in the Stewards’ Handicap, and fan should be improved by that race. Bosky finished boldly for his win in the Riccarton Handicap on Saturday, and in his present form he should again run well. Selections:— Port Cooper High-weight: Cristatus. Diplomatic. Ryeland. Irwell Handicap: Assembly, Ray Ribbon. Rock. Apprentices’ Handicap: King’s Fair, Deodar, Paulette. Fendalton Handicap: Commodore, Silver King, Cash. Canterbury Cup: Red Jester, Idaho, Hutton.
