RED JESTER’S GOOD TRIAL

i SMART GALLOP WITH HUTTON ATTRACTIVE SPRINT BY COALTOWN The Canterbury Cup favourite. Red Jester. brilliantly galloped nine furlongs with Hutton on the plough at Riccarton yesterday, showing that he will be at his best for his attempt to win the longestablished weight-for-age race for a second time. The other feature of a quiet morning’s work was a smart six-furlong sprint by Coaltown and Silver King on the outside of the course proper. Horses which sprinted late in the morning were helped by a nor’-wester. The going was fast. Red Jester (W. L. Aitken) and Hutton (J. W. Harris) ran the last mile of nine furlongs on the plough in Imin 42 3-ssec, the final half mile in 51 2-ssec and the concluding three furlongs in 38 2-ssec. These two good North Island gallopers finished the trial on terms, and did their work attractively. W. J. Broughton will ride Red Jester in the Canterbury Cup. Coaltown (J. W. Harris) beat Silver King (C. H. Mackie) by a neck over six furlongs on the outside of the course proper, and recorded the smart time of Imin 15 4-ssec. Nuttall) and Duel (A. J. Stokes), the first two to sprint on the course proper, ended half a mile on terms in 50sec. This compared more than favourably with some of the later trials over the distance, when the wind had sprung up. Declare (N.
