REMEMBRANCE DAY

COMMEMORATIVE SERVICES

Remembrance Day was observed with appropriate services and prayers in Christchurch churches yesterday. At morning and evening services in the Christchurch Cathedral, tributes were paid to the fallen of both world wars. Sermons preached by the Dean of Christchurch (the Very Rev. Martin Sullivan) and the Bishop of Christchurch (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) touched on the subject of “Remembrance.” Two minutes’ silence was observed at the morning service. At Knox Presbyterian Church and at the Durham Street Methodist Church prayers were offered and a period of silence observed, and at the Durham street dhurch the National Anthem was played. On Saturday evening a crowd of about 500 gathered in Cathedral square to hear a short commemoration service conducted by the Salvation Army. Yesterday morning in the Citadel a servipe conducted by Senior Captain Briggs, formerly a welfare worker with the Australian forces, was entitled “Remembrance.”
