TEST OF U.S. H-BOMB
Explosion Likely At Bikini (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Nov. 5. The United States will conduct new atomic tests in the Pacific next spring and might explode the world’s first practical hydrogen bomb, the United Press said today. The tests will be carried out by United States Atomic Task Force 7, probably at Bikini.
As far as is known, no nation has ever exploded a hydrogen bomb that could be delivered to any enemy target. The United States tested an atomic trigger for hydrogen bombs at Eniwetok in 1951. Last autumn, the Atomic Energy Commission followed •this up with a genuine hydrogen test explosion, but the 1Q52 hydrogen bomb “device” was too pig to be delivered by a plane to an enemy target site. It was reported to be about the size of a small shack.
Since then, atomic scientists have been striving to reduce to deliverable /size the. cumbersome hydrogen device exploded at Eniwetok. Hence the need for new tests.
