JOBS FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

SCHOOL QUALIFICATIONS EMPHASISED

A greater need for children to complete their year’s schooling is seen by the chief vocational guidance officer of the Christchurch centre (Mr G. C. Brookes). Mr Brookes said yesterday that employers seemed to be getting more selective and to require a higher standard in their recruits.

“Boys and girls who are well qualified will find opportunities,” he said, referring to the fear apparently felt by some parents that the increasing number of children leaving school might not all be able to find jobs. The centre had been trying this year to encourage children to consider a wider range of occupations, said Mr Brookes. “There is a tendency, particularly in the country, for children to think only of the familiar types of occupation. We have been trying to make them see the value of others."

Mr Brookes said that he had noticed in his visits to the West Codst, Marlborough, Nelson and to other parts of Canterbury that parents were studying the prospects of various occupations more seriously than before. This he ascribed to the increase in vocational guidance facilities in recent years. -
