SAMOA REVISITED AFTER 30 YEARS
IMPRESSIONS OF MISS JEAN BEGG
Miss Jean Begg (Dunedin) has returned to Wellington from Samoa, which she visited to keep a promise made 30 years ago. Soon after graduating as a teacher, Miss Begg went to American Samoa and spent 10 years there. On her recent visit, she saw several of her former pupils, now middle-aged women, who gave her a royal welcome. She was pleased to note the expansion of the Samoan nursing service which she helped to found. Miss Begg said in Wellington that the Samoan nurses’ training school in Pago Pago had grown to the extent that it now had 73 nurses in training. Forty graduate nurses were working in the hospital and another 40 graduates were doing district work. Miss Eegg saw a group of nurses receive their caps at the end of their first six months’ service, and attended a graduation ceremony for another group. Miss Begg will return to her home in Dunedin.
