GLENELG HEALTH CAMP

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE MEETS The sale of souvenir covers for the Health Stamp campaign is heavy and the Glenelg Health Camp Committee has taken action to ensure that greater supplies wiH be available to meet the great public demand. It is appreciated that last year there were no covers available except for the first two hours on the opening day of the health stamp campaign. That will not occur this year. At Id each, the souvenir covers are being eagerly sought by school children. This report was submitted by Mr R; M. Naysmith (chairman of the sub-committee in charge of the sales) to the monthly meeting of the Glenelg Health Camp Committee last evening. A handsomely framed coloured picture of Prince Charles was presented to the meeting for Glenelg by Mr W. S. Baverstock, who has previously given attractive pictures to be hung at the camp. Appreciation of Mr Baverstock’s generosity, it was decided, would be recorded in the minutes. Mr P. R. Heydon, Australian High Commissioner, wrote accepting the committee’s invitation to visit Glenelg while he is in Christchurch during the London to Christchurch air race. It was decided to thank Mr Heydon and ask if he and Mrs Heydon could visit the camp on October 16. Mr J. Wyn Irwin, for the school committee, submitted the report of the headmistress (Miss D. Munday), who said that the group of girls now in camp were not particularly interested in their lessons but had worked well in the garden. It was planned to bring the children to the city to see the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh during the Royal tour in January. “In my experience as a school inspector, I have never seen school rooms so neat and attractive as those at Glenelg,” said Mr Irwin, who added that Mr T. H. McCombs, a member of the school committee, had suggested that a letter of. appreciation be sent to the teachers, complimenting them on the high standard of neatness and cleanliness in the school rooms. It was decided to act on Mr McCombs’s suggestion. The - chairman (Mr George Burns) reported on a fire that had recently spread at night on the hillside near Glenelg. He praised the work of the Glenelg staff and of the Fire Brigade. A letter will be sent to the superintendent of the Fire Brigade, thanking members of the brigade for their timely assistance. The matron (Mrs E. Morrison) reported that the 42 girls now in camp, some of whom had been pale and nehvy'bn admission, were now well and happy. One girl of six years, who on admission was 46 inches in height and weighed 411 b, had increased 121 b since she had been at Glenelg. Mrs Morrison gratefully acknowledged the kindness of Mr J. Stannage, who had given the camp two dozen gramophone records, of Mr Drayton, who had formed a Brownie pack at Glenelg, and of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, members of which visited Glenelg fortnightly and screened suitable pictures for the entertainment of the children.
