DUNEDIN CLUB’S MEETING
RAGING
Hush Money Selected* In Stakes I DESPERADO FOR « MILE WELTER } Three of the last six winners of the i Dunedin Jockey Club’s McLean Stakes r have been trained at Riccarton, and Hush Money is expected to improve | that record tomorrow, the first day < of the spring meeting at Wingatui. Hush Money is trained by J. C. ! Tomkinson for Mr A. N. Smith, vice- ' president of the Dunedin club. She : is by Faux Tirage from Green Note, a mare by Paper Money, which sired several earlier winners of this race. A sensible youngster, a good beginner, and a filly»>with a beautiful action, Hush Money should be able to capitalise oh her No. 1 barrier position. J. S. Shaw’s pair, Debited and Indulgence, will strengthen the chance of a Riccarton success. Debited is the only one of the 13 in the field to have raced. He was unplaced in the Wanganui Debutant Stakes and ran greenly, but that experience should be valuable to him against less-experi-enced opponents tomorrow. Debited and the Lucky Bag filly Indulgence shaped well in their semifinal trial at Riccarton on Tuesday. The Boss, a bay colt by Boissier from Rose Ileana, is probably the pick of the Wingatui-trained two-year-olds. He is trained by W. E. Hancock for Mr J. P. O’Brien. The same connexions race the smart handicap horse Silence. Ma Reine, the first of the produce of the brilliant Excellency, has shown most promise of the Wingatui fillies. Success for Ma Reine will be of Christchurch interest, for she is owned by Mr D. McFarlane. Southland hopes for success will rest mainly with Mijiji, a bay colt by Super from the Man’s Pal mare Loyal Lady. This colt made a good impression when sprinted at the Eastern Southland Hunt meeting last month, and he could give his province an overdue success in the race. The last Southland winner was Psalm, nine years ago. Golden Morn, an Oamaru-trained Rolled Gold colt, and Smartly, a Theseus filly in H. A. Anderton’s Wingatui stable, have shown the most promise of the others. The field is of a handy size, and youngsters with outside barrier positions will not be under the same disadvantage as in former years, when fields were much I stronger numerically. October Handicap • Desperado, now a five-year-old, may open his winning record for the season . in the October Handicap, the mile wel--5 ter. The class is not strong, and Desper- . ado should not find his 9-6 troublesome 1 against several horses whose form has : been moderate.
Desperado had his first race for the season in the sprint at Ashburton last week. He lost a good positipn early, but a strong run from near the tail of the field in the straight carried him into fourth place. Mr H. D. Greenwood’s Defaulter gelding won the Thompson Handicap as a three-year-old and the James Hazlett Gold Cup at Wingatui last season. The best may be seen of him during the next few months.
Of the others, Peony Royal, Dashing. Gold Tip, and Formal wave, the best form.
Peony Royal was second to Tesla over this distance at Riccarton last month. She ran the race out strongly to finish a length from the winner. At her next start she narrowly won over six furlongs at the Otago Hunt meeting and beat Delayed and the fast-finishing Dashing. Peony Royal is also engaged in the open sprint tomorrow. Her prospects of filling a place look bright in the race chosen for her. Dashing’s form has been mixed, but the best has been seen of her at Wingatui. her home track. Desperado is expected to beat her at the weights, but she is a possibility for a place. Gold Tip was no match for Persian Gulf in the sprint at Ashburton, but his second was an improver’s effort. Formal, at his last start, ran second to Reformed over a mile and a quarter at the Eastern Southland Hunt meeting. He was fourth in the mile Tally-Ho Handicap at the Otago Hunt meeting a week earlier. At his place in the weights he should run well again. The Hurdlers / The field for the Spring Hurdles lacks an outstanding form candidate, and the way is open for a surprise result. Top weight of 11-3 would not stop Glenlivet from running well If he Is at his best, t>ut this Invercargill-trained Sir Simper gelding has not raced since early in the winter. Colonel Argosy has probably freshened up since the Grand National meeting, but his chances look slim unless the track is heavy. More versatile is Cogitation, a winner the last time he raced at Wingatui. That was on the last day of the winter meeting. Since then, he has been placed over hurdles at Trentham and Riccarton. * Cogitation will probably be the favourite. Cpxswain, the only Riccarton representative, carried 11b less than his weight tomorrow to a surprise win in the Trial Hurdles at the Grand National meeting, where he wa% fifth in the other race. He is the veteran of this field, but a sound effort can be expected of him. Reproof was disappointing at the Grand National meeting after winning a hack hurdle race at Trentham in July. He was possibly jaded then, but he should have recovered by now. He will be one of the best light-weights if he runs one of his good races. Ash, a fair fourth at Ashburton, may do best of the others. Brackets: McLean Stakes: Debited and Indulgence, Periapt and Legal Sun. Trial Handicap: St. Truin and Romani Chai. Milling Bay and Some Bounder. Superdowa and Solon, Swift Passage and Strathcarron, Trustworthy and Teviot Chief. October Handicap: Dandy and Gold Tip. Clarendon Handicap’: Master Bobs and Negus. The double will be on the Ranfurly and Telegraph Handicaps. Gardez will not run in the Ranfurly Handicap. Selections:— 11 a.m.—Spring Hurdles: Cogitation. Coxswain, Ash. 11.45 a.m.—McLean Stakes: Hush Money, Mijiji, Debited-Indulgence bracket. 12.30 p.m.—Trial Handicap: Wait a Bit, Royal Warrant, Spike Jones. 1.15 p.m.—Ranfurly Handicap: Travesty, Mararoyal, Lancaster. 2 p.m.—Kaikorai Handicap: Overboard. WILLIAM HYDE SOLD Bought by the Riccarton c. C. McCarthy, soon after the Grand National meeting last month. William Hyde has again been sold. He will do his future racing for Mr W. Prendeville, Leeston, butwin remain In McCarthy’s stable. William Hyde, a handsome chestnut colt by Cassock from Auchenlee. carried McCarthy’s colours In the John Grigg Stakes S’. A ’"burton last Saturday. He finished brilliantly for second, after being well out of his ground on the home turn. William Hyde is unlikely to run tn the Dunedin Guineas tomorrow week. He may race next at Geraldine on September 28, with the Wellington spring meeting to follow.
