TRACK WORK AT ADDINGTON

PLEASING EFFORT BY SALLY WALLA Sally Walla, Excelsa, Sure Charge, and Duncraig were candidates for the New Brighton meeting tomorrow that showed to advantage in their trials at Addington yesterday morning. Track conditions were good, but the horses were hampered by a cold southerly wind in the back straight. The trestles were about 10 feet out from the rails. Sally Walla gave Marathon and another member of F. E. Newfield’s team a big start from the two-mile post, and she finished on to be just behind them at the finish after pacing the full distance in 4min 33sec, the last four furlongs in Imin 6sec. They speeded up over the last quarter, which took 31sec. Sally Walla is a much improved horse and will not be without prospects in the Seaview Handicap, in which she will start from 12 yards. The Bruce Walla mare is a smart sprinter, and it will not surprise if she wins tomorrow. Sure Charge again showed to advantage when he made the pace and finished on terms with Lady Rowan and Distant Star at the end of one mile and a half in 3min 22 2-ssec. the last four furlongs in Imin 5 2-ssec. Sure Charge worked with plenty of dash, and he could easily upset- calculations in the Introductory Handicap. Distant Star .is in excellent order, and he will be one of the favourites for the Sea view Handicap. Excelsa’s Trial Excelsa was running on strongly on terms with Gold Light, with three lengths to Combateer, which had started about 24 yards behind the pacemaker, at the end. of one mile and a half in 3min 25 4-ssec, the last four furlongs in Imin 3 4-ssec, and the last quarter in 32sec. Excelsa is very fit and, if she escapes trouble at the start of the Introductory Handicap tomorrow, she will take beating. Combateer's trial was also a sound one. and he will only need to trot solidly to reach a place in the Shirley Handicap. The Dillon Hall gelding, Duncraig, gave Lindy Lou a start of 36 yards from the mile and a quarter post, and he was right up with her at the post after recording 2min 41sec for the distance, his last four furlongs in Imin 4 3-ssec, and his last quarter in 31 2-ssec. It was a grand effort by Duncraig, a candidate for the Henry Mace Handicap at New Brighton tomorrow. Duncraig put > more dash into his work than he did on Tuesday morning. He may surprise to--1 morrow, when the smallness of the field will be in his favour.

Treviso began very fast in his run over one mile and a quarter in 2min 50 l-ssec, and he was easing up near the post after taking Imin 9sec for his last four furlongs. Zulu’s Pride was under a good hold alongside Goldship after making the pace in their run over one mile and a half in 3min 28 2-ssec, the last four furlongs in Imin ssec, and the last quarter in 31 3-ssec. It was a good effort by Zulu’s Pride.

Improving Pacer Scottish Greetings went at an even pace over two miles in 4min 39sec, her last four furlongs in Imin 7sec. She is coming to hand well, and may soon show worthwhile form.

Retard went quietly over one mile and a half in 3min 22 l-ssec, her last four furlongs in Imin 4 2-ssec, and the last quarter in 31sec. She was working well within herself all the way, and will need only to begin smartly to have prospects in the Farewell Handicap. Alert, which is also coming to hand well for G. S. Smith, took 3min 30 2-ssec for his mile and a half, the last half-mile in Imin ssec. and the last quarter in 32sec. Alert is a lazy track worker. Trixie Milne, which has shown marked improvement in recent weeks, took 3min 24 2-ssec for her mile and a half, her last half in Imin 4 2-ssec. She was finish- , ing on strongly after taking 31 4-ssec for ' her last quarter. Silver Circle had plenty of pace on in ' her run alone, over, two miles. The last > mile and a half took 3min 25sec and the ; last quarter 33sec. She is near her best again, and .may show form in the next > few weeks. I Bobby Brigade and Springwater took I 3min 26 3-ssec for their mile and a half, ; the last four furlongs in Imin 5 3-ssec, I and the last quarter in 31 3-ssec.

HEAVY TRACK AT EPSOM PETITE YVONNE AGAIN WORKS WELL "The Press” Special Service AUCKLAND, September 17. There has been heavy rain at Auckland during the last few days, and the track is certain to be soft for the ’ opening day of the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. The South Island horses, Authie, Bronze Indian, Au Re voir, Jack Peterson, Midnight. and Regalia arrived this morning, but they were not worked. All of them appear to have travelled well. Single Direct worked two miles unhoppled in smin 2sec, the last four furlongs in Imin lOsec. Though he has been off the scene for so long. Single Direct is coming to hand surprisingly well, but he is on awkward marks and will find further promotion difficult. Mac’s Mistake, a noted performer in bad ground, stayed on better than Grenade at the end of two miles in smin 13sec, the last four furlongs ih Imin Usee. Billy Boy, which has now come into favour for the September Handicap as a result of the easing of the track, broke when covering one mile and a half in 3min 50sec. He looks in great order, and should be hard to beat on Saturday. His stablemate, Peterhead, revelled in an easy run. He, too, will be in demand on Saturday. Dawnlight, one of the early favourites for the September Handicap, did not relish the conditions when pacing two miles in smin 15sec, the last four furlongs in Imin 13sec.

Old Scotch stretched out freely in his run over one mile and a half in 3min 55sec, the first mile in 2min 40sec. He is very fit. On the shell track, Irish Flax was never at top speed in a run over two miles m 4min 45sec, the last half-mile in Imin 7 3-ssec. He has Jhown a preference for firm going, and may not have conditions to suit him on Saturday. He is well forward. Single Maid impressed by the manner in which she completed one mile and a half in 3min 25 3-ssec, the last two furlongs in 32sec. Rhapsody, a four-year-old by Highland Fling, completed one mile and a quarter in 2min 54sec, the last two furlongs in 33sec. S. A.
