STOCK EXCHANGES AUSTRALIAN ISSUES DECLINE Relatively light trading r took place on the Christchurch Stock Exchange yesterday. Over all, there was no material alteration in prices of New Zealand shares, although Australian-domiciled issues lost considerably. More buyers appeared for Government stocks, and sellers were outnumbered. Coles lost further around in business at 15s 4d. and at the close of the day buyers offered 15s 3d—sellers 2d away. McKenzies sold unchanged at 15s 4d, with buyers prepared to carry on at this price, but no further sellers appeared. No other chain store Issues • were traded. Woolworths. Ltd., fell noticeably on buyers* ex' dividend * quotations. to : 14s 3d—a loss of lOd overnight—after sellers had lowered their price by lid to 14s 6d. Wdolworths New Zealand, were wanted at 20s, but sellers were reticent, and sales were effected in the north at 20s 6d. In line with lower quotations for a number of Australian stocks. Broken Hill Proprietary slipped Is in business at 31s 3d. and closing quotations were buyers 375, and sellers 37s Bd. The sudden weakening in Australian share prices may be due to two factors: (1) the marked decline on Wall Street; and (2) tne abolition of the quarterly basic wage adjustment,. regardless of fluctuations in the cost of living. Responding to the announcement of an increased dividend, -South British Insurance sold Is 9d up at 56s 9d, with further buyers at 56s 6d, and sellers at 57s 3d.
