GENERAL WAGE CLAIM

GOVERNMENT AMENDS REGULATIONS RETROSPECTIVE ORDEIt MAY BE MADE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, September If. The Government has amended the economic Stabilisation Regulations, 1953, to allow the Court of Arbitration, at its discretion, to fix a date no earlier than September 15, 1953, for toe commencement of a general wage order. The amendment relates only to the present application by the Federation of Labour. ' The Minister of Labour (Mr W. Sullivan), announcing this today, said that although there was much objection to retrospective wage increases, which caused undue embarrassment to manufacturers, who were held by fixed prices, and to many others, who had no means of recovering the additional wages they had to meet, the Government had, in view of exceptional circumstances and in fairness to workers generally, decided to amend the regulations. The Court of Arbitration had not been able to arrange a commencement of the hearing of the application for a general wage order earlier than September 23 because of toe unexpected illness of Mr Justice Tyndpll.
