N.Z. RED CROSS SOCIETY
PLANS FOR AID TO GREECE (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, August 21. “We made a very large effort earlier in the year and perhaps we cannot expect the same response from the public as we had for the North Sea flood relief.” said the chairman (Mr A. E. Gibbons) at the-annual conference today of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. Explaining the executive’s plans for relief for sufferers in the earthquakes in Greece, Mr Gibbons said that clothing from New Zealand in store with the British Red Cross was already being sent to Greece. The League of Red Cross Societies was sending officers there to assist the Hellenic Red Cross. The distribution of all relief would be . very properly and adequately controlled. In the circumstances the executive had decided that the best contribution from New Zealand would be an appeal for money that could be converted conveniently into whatever was most urgently required in Greece. The following officers were elected: president. Dr. Alexander Gillies; Dominion chairman, Mr A. E. Gibbons (Hamilton); honorary treasurer, Mr Norman Lee: Dominion executive, Mesdames J. Jarvis (North Taranaki), L. Wells (Wellington) j Miss M. Magill (Wellington), Major N. Rattray (Waimate), Messrs J. Abel (Hawke’s Bay), D. C. Collins (Wellington). A. E. Kincaid (North Canterbury), W. P. Newton (Hawke’s Bay). M. A. Raymond (Timaru), C. V. Smith (Otago), C. F. A. Waters (Wellington), and R. Watson (Auckland). The next annual meeting will be in Dimedin. NORTH CANTERBURY SUBSCRIPTIONS Subscriptions amounting to £447 15s 4d for Greek earthquake relief have been received by the North Canterbury centre of the New Zealand Red Cross Society.
