ARMY HEADQUARTERS
Sir, —A lot is being said about tidying Christchurch before the Royal visit. I think a good start could be made at the entrance to the Army HeadSuarters on Lincoln road. All through lis winter and the previous one a small lagoon of stagnant water has lain along a dividing fence, and coarse gravel is strewn all over the footpath by motor vehicles. It is the most untidy frontage on Lincoln road and an eyesore. It does not reflect credit on the Army Department.—Yours, etc., E. PARLANE.
July 14, 1953. [When this letter was referred to Lieutenant-Colonel Purcell, Chief of Staff, Southern Military district, he said that major construction work had been in progress over the last two years. Proposals for completion, which included a neat and attractive entrance off Lincoln road, had been considered for some time and it was expected that approval for the completion of the project would soon be to hand.]
